Grahamstown

The Heart of the Eastern Cape

Grahamstown is unique amongst rural towns of South Africa in that its offerings combine aspects of rural living with features and activities that are normally only available in big cities. Much of this can be attributed to the presence of Rhodes University as well as private and public schools.

Typical of a country lifestyle, traffic is not an issue in Grahamstown: nothing is more than five minutes away (except for the seashore, which requires a mere 55-minute drive to Port Alfred or Kenton-on-Sea). On the other hand, the presence of many private and public educational and cultural institutions means that Grahamstown citizens have access to a wide range of cultural, religious and sporting activities and events. Music and choir concerts, dance and drama performances offer Grahamstown residents rich and fulfilling experiences throughout the year.

An active citizenry, evident in a large number of civic organisations in Grahamstown, not only ensures constant pressure on local government structures to maintain infrastructure and deliver services, but also affords residents opportunities to engage with fellow residents around issues of mutual concern.
